Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) printers use standard ink cartridge systems and do not require any bottles of inks or solvent, making thermal ink jet printers clean and simple to use.
Thermal inkjet prints using a drop ejection process. The ink is stored in a containment and pressure regulation system (cartridge). The ink is conveyed to the firing chamber, where an electric resistor heats the ink at more than 1,000,000 ºC/second. A film of ink about 0.1 micrometer thick is heated to about 340 ºC where a bubble is formed to expel the ink. A droplet of ink is then extruded and breaks off, causing the bubble to collapse and the firing chamber refills with ink starting the process off again.
