complacent, bored and switch off, even momentarily, leading to errors.\u00a0 And when it\u2019s a repetitive task they are being asked to perform, the chances of something going wrong is much higher.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be clear, what is human error?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is defined by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/human%20error\">Merriam-Webster<\/a>\u00a0as:\u00a0\u201cA person&#8217;s mistake rather than on the failure of a machine\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/slips\/\">Nielson Norman Group\u2019s article by Page Laubheimer<\/a>\u00a0touches on where to apportion blame for a human error \u2013 does it lie with the user or with the designer of the system?\u00a0 The article states that \u2018the designer is at fault for making it too easy for the user to commit the error \u2026 and therefore the answer is to redesign the system to be less error prone.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The article goes on to define two types of user error:\u00a0 slips and mistakes.\u00a0 Slips occur when the user is on autopilot and may inadvertently, for example, key in an \u2018o\u2019 instead of a \u2018p\u2019.\u00a0 Whereas a mistake is a conscious error and stems from a misunderstanding of the original goal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-navi-blue-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What are the consequences of using a poorly-designed User Interface (UI)?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is of course, considerable impact to using a poorly-designed UI \u2013 namely your bottom line, and you can\u2019t really afford to get it wrong.\u00a0 There is lost production with staff taking longer to perform tasks as well as taking longer to train initially.\u00a0 Add to that staff stress, possible late deliveries, creating unnecessary waste, fines and scheduling for expensive rework, all need to be taken into account and kept to an absolute minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-navi-blue-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Can you spot a bad UI?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/h2o-digital.com\/user-interface-good-design-vs-bad-design\/\"><strong>h2o-digital.com<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;has listed the following as traits of a bad UI:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sluggish and unresponsive \u2013 interaction will be slow and clunky<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complicated \u2013 hard for people to understand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confusing \u2013 unclear about where the user should go next<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inconsistent design \u2013 pages will look different, throwing users off<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Readability issues \u2013 font size too small, inappropriate font selection, poor colour schemes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-navi-blue-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong>So, how do we get it right and support our fellow human being?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, to start with a well-designed UI would go a long way to reducing initial errors and keep the production line running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGood design, when it\u2019s done well, become invisible.\u00a0It\u2019s only when it\u2019s done poorly that we notice it\u201d.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hackernoon.com\/6-bad-ui-design-examples-common-errors-of-ui-designers-e498e657b0c4\">Jared Spool<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many design features to take into account and kit has to be selected which is right for your particular circumstances and workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading has-navi-blue-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Below are a few features you may wish to consider before making your final decision:<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are the screens uncluttered and easy to navigate?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is there synergy between the screens so you know where you are and where you have been?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there options to create different level logins to control access?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the User Interface customisable for quick and easy access to popular functions?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does the User Interface show simple graphical guides for support?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" should be clear that by investing in a product with a solid UI with proven design qualities, you will be providing your customers with reliable, accurate deliveries whilst reducing your internal costs.\u00a0 Staff will be more productive, confident in their abilities and waste will be minimised, together with expensive rework and costly downtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t underestimate the effect a happy, productive workforce has on your brand.\u00a0 Staff feel valued when they appreciate time and effort has been spent on sourcing the best possible equipment to help them do their job,
